I found reference to this in a Holmes story - Sherlock recommended it to Watson - and I did a search to find if it was "real". Of course it was. In fact it was a favorite of Winston Churchill. So I read one man's look - through 19th century eyes - at history, and religion, and cultural development. It is insightful and thought provoking and stands up to scrutiny 150 years after it was authored. It is in some ways dated - a product of its time - but in other ways it is transcendental and well worth the read. It would be instructive to many who seek - and to many who have - political power in these "modern" times. It is a very readable work, written in great earnest, and highly recommended.Tags : Martyrdom of Man, The [Winwood Reade, John M. Robertson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Very impressive writing.
Received my book on time, in the shape it was described. Very happy with the book.
An amazing book written over a hundred years ago by a protege of Charles Darwin. The history of the world. The rise and fall of nations religions and great men throughout the history of mankind!
First off know that I am NOT a history buff! After reading 1491 and 1493 (which I loved) I wanted to know more about the events of human development from earliest times; what was going on in the world before Columbus and just how did the world (form Europe to Asia and Africa) evolve to the time of Columbus and the exploration of that time. In addition the book explains the development of societies, religions, morals and cultures. I wish I had read it before 1491 and 1493.
"One of the most remarkable books ever written."
So said Sherlock Holmes.
So echoeth moi!
The author makes a strong historical case for the necessity of a dramatic shift away from Christianity in order for humanity to grow properly. In light of recent events I'm confident the author would have included Islam in his warning since the same type of rabid dogmatism is shared by both so called religions. It is difficult to find fault with the well reasoned and thoroughly researched writing and equally difficult to believe anything could come of all his work. Ignorance operating under the guise of faith and the will to power hidden beneath the promise of heaven and the dread of hell are as prevalent in our day as in his. Interesting that both Winston Churchill and Arthur Conan Doyle considered this their favorite book. An extraordinary read.
Very interesting and influential book. Lots of its ideas contribute to current cultural thinking. Its s tough read in places as it reflects the imperialism and implicit racism of Victorian UK.
