It was during the 1600s that Barbary corsairs-pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa were at their most active and terrible. With the full support of the Moorish rulers of North Africa, these Muslim slavers raided southern Europe, the Atlantic European coast, Britain and Ireland almost at will. Most estimates indicate that by 1780, at least 1.2 million Europeans had been seized. Very few ever managed to escape, and most ended their days dying of starvation, disease, or maltreatment. This remarkable book, first published in 1693, contains one of the few genuine eye-witness accounts, written by a white slave who managed to escape. Its graphic description of the lot of white slaves, the Moorish relations with the Jews of North Africa, the conditions of the time and the author's eventual escape, cast a dramatic and nowadays, oft-hidden light upon the time when whites were enslaved.

This is an eye-opener of the times of the Barbary Pirates. Many Euopeans were kipnapped from boats, from coastal villages, and these people, in all likelihood, were never heard from again. A real eye opener of what those on the tip of Africa thought of the terribly inferior white-skins. A tale evoking disbelief, horror, and wonder of how some of these EVER survived for 20-30 years in the first place. A good piece of history that I never read in my World History studies in college! This kidnapping of Europeans (some Russians, too) resulted in over a million and 2/10 people being victims--researched thoroughly, and studied well as to accuracy. At that time, England did not have the Navy to deter these pirates. The Caucasians were sold into slavery--families, husbands, wives, children, separated from one another, into a life time of horrible slavery. This went on far longer than the slavery that is a big part of American history here; yet, who's heard of it?!!! Those slaves, who after great deprivations, and physical cruelty, succumbed to adopting the Islamic religion were then treated better. However, one slave who DID adopt his captor's religion, when he FINALLY managed, years later to return to England, the first thing he did was to flee to the church of his childhood religion and give thanks for, at last, his freedom. Great book
This book was fairly informative, but really on the short side.
Good historical perspective on the heinous cruelty towards decent ppl that comes lockstep with Islam.
Strange and repetitive book, but interesting nonetheless.
