One main thing that stuck with me was the glaring inconsistency of someone like Jo who is fanatically committed to the environment. In real life, someone with her lifestyle and health choices would never acquiesce to using a commercial rodent killer to put UNDER their house. To add to that, she throws newborn baby mice out of the place they're cleaning out! That does not seem in keeping with someone who is fanatical about the environment. That whole part was disturbing. Thankfully, the story was short. I, too, found the author's agenda and personal beliefs too much, especially inserting things into the story such as the farmers spraying their fields ignorantly and mentioning organic, free-trade, etc., every chance she could...too heavy-handed. There was too much personal agenda about clean food/living, organic way of life and it detracted from the story. I found Jo to be irritating--pushy and obnoxious about her beliefs and lifestyle choices. I would like to encourage the author to tone down the whole organic living agenda and in my opinion, the stories might very well be a pleasant read.Tags : Raspberries and Vinegar (A Farm Fresh Romance) [Valerie Comer] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. WINNER: The Word Award for Best Contemporary Romance of 2013 Sweet like Raspberries. Sighs. Where to start.
I'm passionate about sustainable living, eating local, and small scale farming. I purchase the majority of my food, including all of my meat, from local farmers. So when I came across this romance, I loved the premise. Three girls who are passionate about local, sustainable food, essentially starting a homestead together? Sounds great!
Unfortunately, there is just SO much wrong with this book. First of all, as other reviewers have mentioned, the main character is completely unlikeable. I have never read a book where I disliked the heroine to this degree. I kept reading, thinking that the plan MUST be for her to undergo deep changes and become a likable person, but that never happened. She's preachy, judgmental, uptight, holds everyone around her to a ridiculous standard, is insanely jealous of her friends, is whiny. . . I mean, I seriously never found one thing about her to like!
Secondly, the "romance" was non-existent. The two characters barely even interacted the entire book, and every time they did, they seemed to despise each other. I know that the despise each other at first thing is pretty typical for a romance, and obviously characters have to have misunderstandings and road blocks to make the story interesting, but they seriously NEVER gave me a reason to even root for them. They weren't friends. There weren't really scenes of them getting to know each other. It was a mutual attraction, lots of awkward fights where very little was even said, mostly time apart where they both thought about the other one, and then a marriage proposal. They never dated. They never even really became friends. It was just strange.
Third, as others have mentioned, the environmental stuff was just way over the top. Again, I believe in eating local! I believe in growing my own food! But I couldn't stand the over the top judgement of anyone who wasn't a fanatic about it. And one scene (***SPOILER ALERT***) was just ridiculous and inappropriate, where a character died in a no-fault car accident and at her funeral the whole thing was blamed on the food industry. That whole story line should have been left out, in my opinion. It added nothing to the story, wasn't pleasant to read, and just felt like one more way the author tried to use fear and guilt to promote the food message.
I'm sort of interested in reading the second book, since I liked the other characters way better than the main character in this story. . . but if I start it and it's the same as this one, I won't be finishing it. Which is sad, because the author has a lot of potential. I think if she focused on telling a good story instead of spreading a message, I would be a lot more interested in reading her work.
Josephine and her two girlfriends are going organic and green, back to living on the land. But next door lives a brand new vet Zachary and his border collie Domino, only back from the city to help out his folks. Sparks are flying, but can they find sweet romance among the sour facts of life? Fantastic story! Great characters and original plotlines. The wisdom of a God centered life woven lovingly into the storyline.

I really wanted to like this novel. The idea for the story seemed good, seemed workable, for a good story. The author simply couldn't pull it all together.
There was just way too much conflict, too much anger, too much dislike, even hatred, between the two main characters. There was just too much conflict going on all the way through the story for it to be anything like an enjoyable romance novel. I wanted to like it, but...

For a Christian Romance this book is written strangely. First off pinky mice are flung by the main character onto the love interest, and then thrown away, making me dislike the main character right away. (I shared this bit with my husband, not letting him know it was the main character, and his reply was that the reader was probably supposed to dislike that character) For a book that has the main character claiming to want to take care of Gods earth the way he intended it to be....flinging days old baby mice off the front porch is not the way to do it. Secondly the relationship advice given to the main character is horrible. Scinareo is she didn't want to settle for a guy that wants to make a living in the city because she loves living on a farm. The advice her friend gives her is "guys are malleable. If he really loves you, he'll try to make you happy." Oh joy lets get the poor sap to fall in love and then manipulate him into submitting to your every whim! While we are at it, let's toss around more baby animals! (Yes i know those are fictitious baby animals, but it made all my compassion for the fictisious main character dry up instantly) Good thing it was $0.00f or
