Bound to Shadows Keri Arthur Books

I've enjoyed the Riley Jensen/Guardian series ever since getting a Kindle freebie of the first book a couple of months ago. I zipped through all of them, liking some better than others, but all have been enjoyable and worth the read. Bound to Shadows is no exception, but it had a couple of problems.

In this book, Riley tries to uncover who is beheading local vampires and killing women who are addicted to being bitten by vampires. The plot is fast-paced, but it seems to take a backseat to the dilemma between Riley, Quinn, and Kye. Usually I'm all for this kind of dilemma, loving the interaction and drama between the characters as much as an exciting plot. In this case, however, the drama and tension wasn't as intense as it could've been, or should've been based on previous books in this series.

I'm trying not to post major spoilers but this may contain mild ones, so please be aware of that before continuing.

Riley and Quinn's relationship has matured since the last book, and although Riley still feels the pull of her werewolf nature, she's committed to the love she feels for Quinn. That commitment should've been enough to make her resist accepting Kye as her soulmate - creating tension for the reader. The author didn't rely on that, though, and instead decided to villainize Kye too much. In previous books, he wasn't the epitome of warmth and kindness, but he wasn't quite the cold-hearted killer he was in this book. He didn't have many, if any, redeeming qualities in this book, so Riley's dilemma was too simplistic.

Although I've always pulled for Quinn, I wouldn't have minded seeing glimpses of what a relationship with a not-so-villainous Kye could have been. It would've made Riley's struggle to hold on to Quinn even more worthwhile and satisfying for the reader. The author usually does a better job with this emotional complexity and tension.

All that said, I did enjoy the book, just not as much as I hoped to. It just didn't quite reach its potential.

Bound to Shadows Keri Arthur Books Reviews

I loved it!! Fast paced, twists & turns, laughter & tears!! I think it’s the best one yet in the series but still one more to go.
I have read the whole series and enjoy Riley very much. I like her humor, love of her pack and her relationship with Quinn, who I think is very hot and her kick-ass attude, which also wasn't present. Quinn wasn't in this book very much which was dissappointing.Kye was a waste in this book I was hopeing for some real struggles with-in Riley between her Vampire love and her wolf soul mate. It would have made great tension for a couple books. Instead Riely was winny ,not much action compared to the other books. I want the old Riley back.
I think this is one of the best books in the series. I just loved it. It was sexy, the mystery was awesome,it was heart breaking and the action was intense.

The ending was shocking. Even when I suspected it to be this someone I just couldn't believe it when it was. Then when that certain someone dies, I was heart broken (a different someone not the suspect.lol)

I love that Riley got to play around with both Quinn and Kye. I know I love Quinn but it was hard not to want to see some Kye action when your inside Rileys head.

This is an amazing series. I am putting off reading the last one because I do not want it to end. Every book so far has been awesome. If you haven't checked them out then you are missing one awesome series!
Bound to Shadows is book eight of the Riley Jensen, Guardian series by Keri Arthur.

There's been a rash of vampire beheadings as well as girls dropping dead for no reason. They're not connected, or are they? Oh, and Kye Murphy, deadly werewolf assassin and Riley's soul mate, is back in town to claim what's his. Nothing is going to stand in his way. Not Riley's case or her desires.

Kye is everything Riley never wants to be, but her wolf soul can't resist. She knows she might lose her vampire over this, and she fights. But its a losing battle. Quinn is her heart, but Kye claimed her soul.
This book could have been so much better had the background story not felt like she was just repeating the story of book 7 only with new characters and the add plot of her soul mate finally showing up. The fact that he was a assassin was a awesome twist and could have made the book so much better if it would have been the focus of the book more and the back story dropped all together. I would have liked more of a build up to their relationship as well as more tension and some interaction between Quinn and Kye. It would have made the book so much better. The author really seemed to just throw the book together instead of writing a quality story like she did with the first 7 books.
This book will ramp up anyone's emotions who allows themselves to become invested in characters and what happens to them. I'm glad a few things happened in this book that did to the main character and others are just beyond horrible. If this had been the end of the series, it would have been both tragic and ironically fitting with the main character's train wreck of a life that Fate had thrown her way. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of diong that. If you liked this series so far, you must get this book. I don't think you'll regret it. If you've read my other reviews, you'll know I have said that before, but I say it because I believe it's true. I say you should read this series because it's just a good time and even if it's emotionally taxing at times, it's worth it. Go for it!
I loved the twist in this book, and I think a lot of people misunderstood it.
*minimal spoilers*
Kye being evil wasn't about making the choice easy for Riley. In this mythology, there is no choice for soul mates. You are irrevocably drawn to your soul mate regardless of who or what they may be. THAT is the struggle. She finally finds what she's been looking for...and it's horrible. The only reason she is able to resist (and barely at that) is due to her hybrid nature.
It makes sense, and it's not lazy writing.
